Default mmm, new toy!

Well, a nice big brown G5 size box turned up on my desk today.

Seems to contain a G5 that isn't a G5

You get an echo when you shout inside the casing as there is so little inside there

Does it have "Intel Inside" written on it?

The only way to make a PC any good - put it inside a Mac

Would the reports that this latest G5 model ( I am of course referring to the dual 2.7 ) is a very fast machine when running the Apple software be true?

It'd be nice if Apple made a note *somewhere* that you MUST have a fully digital monitor to use this nice new machine. DVI-D only (ie; not analog support, so a DVI to VGA connector cannot be used)

Would have been nice to know this little factoid a bit earlier.

OK, nice new Hyundai 90+D is now attached and the beast is alive

Looks and smells like a Macintosh, runs OS X like a Macintosh.

Seems pretty quick. A spotlight search on an item found in header files retrurned full results very quickly indeed. (Can't give comparison figures as we're not allowed to give out benchmark info )

We'll be rebuilding things today, and should, hopefully, by the end of today, know what does and does not work. We're not expecting total compatibility out of the box, but we know what we do have to change, and think we even have the code somewhat ready to do that

If you love your Macintosh, you'll still love these new machines. They might say Intel on the chipset, but apart from that, it's a Mac

Hey markus as a Mac dev do you know much about this codeweavers cross-over product, they reckon once OS X is on intel it will be easy for wintel devs to re-compile for OS X ?

cheers

Got a link for the product? I'll ask one of the dev team what they think.

Recompilation is one thing. We can compile our code for Windows as it stands, however, it won't work, as it's designed to work on a Mac, not windows. Same theory is true of going the other way, regardless of the machine's chipset. It's still running the Mac OS and not Windows, and thus things work differently, and so you need to change the code to make things work.

I wish it was as simple as just recompiling for whatever OS you want, but alas it's not.

markus, http://www.codeweavers.com/about/gen...s/?id=20050622 looks like they haven't actually released *anything* as yet. Point taken about x-plat you need to be aware of issues, Ive ported my delphi code to linux under kylix and even things like fonts you have to consider, I always use native executables that do not rely on any 3rd party libraries to render controls (DB stuff yes) and that makes things easier, will be interested to see how this all develops.
