Question Merging C drive and E drive

My friends pc has a hdd partition, his software was installed in the E drive and once up and running he was left with a C and E drive.

He wants to merge the two, how can he do this?

Hes running XP Home.

If he deleted E would it shift the space to the C drive?

The pc came like this so if he reformatted would he just have a C drive or would the E drive still be entact??

He'll need something like Partition Magic, which can do it. Should be about £40. Make sure he backs everything up first though.

download a DOS tool called FDISK

Also be sure to backup the data that you want to keep

Surely FDISK can only do that with blank partitions? Or they will be blank once they've been merged.

An alternative is to download a Knoppix bootable CD and then use QTParted to merge the partitions together.

However, the main problem from the original post appears to be that applications are installed on the E: drive therefore the registry will be full of entries pointing to that partition. You could do something like exporting the registry as a text file then do a search and replace, but to be honest you'll probably find it easier just to do a complete reformat and reinstall.
