Question IT Contracting

Hi

I am thinking about going into the Contracting world, i am a J2EE Developer with about 10years IT experience in a variety of fields.

I am a little unsure about how to go about things, i guess i need an accountant and a company name - how do i go about getting these things sorted.

How much is the going rate for this type of work, i dont want to undersell myself and equally as important i dont want to price myself out of the market.

Any good websites i can be refered to that show the pitfalls/things to look out for.

Just any info anyone can give me would be a real help.

Thanks

p.s anyone need a J2EE Developer

Lots of IT contractor specialist accountancy companies on the web that will set up a limited company for you and do your accounts.
Best to get in touch with the contract agencies for work or use jobserve to submit your cv or apply for specific roles.

Or you could use an umbrella company so you dont have to form a limited co., as above lots of accountants who specialise in IT contractors, my old one Niman Linden based in the city were always very good handled everything for me. As for J2EE work its a good skill to have and the banks would probably pay you good money for your skills, outside of that I think the money isnt that great, tbh the money in contracting is nothing like it used to be the glory days are long gone, everyone wants 101 skills with in depth experience but doesnt want to pay for it. But hey dont let that put you off, you would still earn a good living as a 'cont'

You could try JSA. I used them for 7 years while I was contracting. They took care of everything from getting a company name, registering for VAT to sending you payslips.
Their website is www.jsagroup.co.uk

If you get a good umbrella company then good, but remeber it's a wide wild world and there are lots sof cowboys. A friend of mine had to take his agency to courts for not receiving payments over a three month period.

My accountant charges £400 annual fee and he takes care of the books. Also, watch out for IR35, it's a bloody killer, some umbrella companies let you opt out, legally you have a choice.

J2EE is hot @ present, depending on your location but if you are in the city of london and banking you should be looking at £400 - £700 per day. I don't know about other areas but it shouldn't be far off.

Good luck

For a Technical Architect maybe, not just a developer. And most developers in the city need to have some specialist financial/mathematical knowledge, which isn't easy to blag if you haven't done it.
