DVD Drive making scratchy noises....

Sounds familiar? The Samsung unit we have won't play back dvds, load dvd compatibles but will open scratched, buggered cd roms! Is it totaled? Whenever I try a dvd it just does...well nothing and makes faint scratchy noises?
Ideas?

Combis were notoriously unreliable: clean the lens, if that doesnt work then bin it; theyre so cheap now.

Yes I had one that kept on locking the computer and had trouble reading some DVD's.

I put a new unit in and all is as it should be now.
