Default Windows Media Player Misbehavin'

I've just taken a new PC with XP SP2 into use, replacing an old one also with SP2, but on which I had kept WMP well away from talking to Microsoft over the years......!

The new WMP plays some legacy files, and also plays some streaming files, in bright false-colour "negative" with no detail visible - i.e. completely unwatchably: some are .wmv and some are .mpeg, so it doesn't seem to be associated with one particular file type. I haven't been able to work out why some files play OK and others don't.

I sort-of suspect that it's some MS "devilry" due to the new WMP being slightly newer version than the old.....Anyone know what's going on, and how to reconfigure, please??

TIA

Phil
