Default recommend a problem free chipset for socket A processor ?

I have an overheating problem with an MSI motherboard. After much "swapping about" its definitely the motherboard.

Can someone suggest a nice problem free chipset / motherboard that will not give me any overheating problems. CPU = Athlon 2200XP (socketA)

I've used NVidia NForce 1 and 2 in the past with no problems, but am keen to hear anyone else's opinion.

Have had great success with both Abit and Asus boards in PC's that I've built (Currently running an Asus A7v8x in one of my home machines, although this board is at least a year or so old and it's running a socket a XP2800+)

Good luck

Ditto -- nForce 2 here without problems (Abit NF7-S v2). Previous Via chipset-based mobos were less reliable.

NForce 2 and AMD 2500 Barton in a Shuttle for me - Runs a little hot (guess that's the lack of space in teh case more than anything else) but machine is pretty reliable.

abit NF7 -s Rev2 here - great board

Are you sure it's not your cooling that's a problem rather than the mobo?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but ASUS are really tough boards to troubleshoot. For cheapness ASrock seem to have a low fail rate, and gigabyte. Nforce is known also to be buggy.

I myself am running an ASUS board and have built a hell of alot of ASUS based machines, the boards can be a right ****.

I'm running:

NF7-S rev 2.0
Athlon XP 3000 Barton
1 gig ddr 3200
2 x 160 gig maxtor SATA
Nvidia 6800
Lian-li PC-7 case
1 x Thermalright SK7
4 x Thermaltake Smart Case fanII

I usually run @ 35-39 deg idle & 45-47 when gaming

/edit. the ASUS A7N8X rev 1.0 was plagued with problems whet were resolved with a recond release of the board. I doubt very much if it'll be a rev 1.0 that you are buying.

I've owned the rev 2.0 and it was fine (I broke it myself when a PSU died.)

BlkKnight - its the latest evolution of the board I've bought.

The A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard improves on the popular A7N8X Deluxe by adding Gigabit LAN and the exclusive ASUS Wi-Fi slot for easy wireless LAN setup. Of course, innovative features such as AGPPro/8x, Dolby® digital 6-channel audio, onboard IEEE 1394, Serial ATA, dual-channel DDR 400 and a dual LAN design are still included in this latest board
