Default "Not Supported"

my little boy has been playing on my computer this afternoon, my wife came to sign him off and noticed that the computer screen was black except for a little blue box in the centre of the screen which has the words not supported in it.
Has anyone any ideas how to get rid of this as my desktop has vanished????

thanks

Nige

Sounds like he's maybe changed the screen resolution or refresh rate to a setting that your monitor doesn't support?
Could that be the case?

Yup - that's precisely what has happened - start up in safe mode and reset the resolution to something sensilble.

Then make sure you have the correct monitor type defined in advanced properties, and that the box for 'do not show unsupported modes' is ticked.

Oh, and make sure you aren't running at 60Hz, 'cos it'll give you headache! (72 is the MINIMUM that the human eye will not pick up a flicker)
