as above says, i have aquired some small videos(avi) that are quite short(1min) and want to be able to play them on my phone. is it just a case of using dvd shrink to make the file small enough to fit on my phone?

You'll need to convert them to .3gp format

I use Xilisoft 3GP Video Convertor but I've found it can't encode everything.
