Default Upgrading to Win2003 from Win2000 and new server..

We are looking at upgrading our win2000 ad to win2003.

Our main server will be changing to a new "beefy" server.

What is the best way to go about upgrading the whole domain to win2003?

Is it as simple as installing win2003 on the new server, running dcpromo, making it part of the win2k ad, then upgrading the win2k machines to 2003?

Also, I will also need to move Share names and permissions from the old main server to the new main server.

Is the best solution still to restore from tape, then dumping the reg with the shares from one server, and importing the other (and changing path if need be).. or is their a simple gui util I can use that will do the job and transfer the files etc???

Before you make a w2k3 server a DC you'll need to run these off a w2k3 CD:
adprep /forestprep
adprep /domainprep

Thats what I was gonna say

You could always just join the new server to the existing domain. Then run dcpromo on it. This will (should) move all the Master roles over to the new 2k3 server. Then you will need to configure the domain to be a native 2k3 domain.

christian, it works but..

Id look into adding a 2003 server into the domain, transfer fsmo roles then raise the function level.

If you do upgrade the server, do that then build your new server on a new box, transfer all the roles from the upgraded box, then do a fresh install on the upgraded box.

I'm in the processing of moving our DCs to 2003 (some member servers will stay on 2000). All done as David suggests - fresh installs and migrate to the 'new' server.
