How do i create a BIG file under Windows server?
Is there some easy way to create a LARGE file (say 1GB) under Windows 2000 server or Windows 2003 server?
It needs to be via "standard functionality" - maybe something like a DOS command on the lines of "CREATE/SIZE=1000MB A.TXT". I don't want to be messing with 3rd party tools.
Basically i want to reserve a bunch of space, so that when the **** inevitably hits the fan and something gobbles up all the free disk, i can delete this "temp file" to give myself some breathing space!
'Twas easy on VMS 20 years ago - i hope that Microsoft can continue the traddition (especially as they nicked the architecture )

I have a program called dummy file creator that i use for Xbox disc to pad them out. You just specify the size and it creates a file where you want. can email it if you would like?

Chris,
nice bit of lateral thinking there - i like it
STi wanna Subaru,
Looks interesting, but a third-party tool would be a last resort! Ideally i want some facility that is already present on a Windows Server.
Anyone got any other ideas?
Cheers,

Res Kit (may be included now, can't remember) util called something like "creatfil"
I use it in a batch that will delete files at 7pm for overnight processing and then fill up the server with 1Gb files leaving <1Gb at 7am so the b'stard users don't nick all the space with backups of c drives, downloads etc.
In a crisis, I can release space but means I don't have to check the boxes everyday and don't get called out at night when overnight jobs run out of space.

On XP, there is a program called FSUtil, this can be found here:
%Windir%\System32\FSUtil.exe
Usage is:
FSUtil.exe File Createnew <Filename> <Size in Bytes>
eg
FSUtil File Createnew c:\Filler.bigfile 1048576
this creates a 1MB fill in the root of C: called Filler.bigfile
Hope this helps
