Default Netgear WG311 winxp driver agro...

Hi Guys,

I know this is a familiar theme, numpty's like me buying wireless kit and then scratching their head when it isn't plug and play.

Bought a wireless router which is downstairs (DG834G) and a WG311v2 PCI adapter in my desktop upstairs. Initially I installed the PCI card with the CD driver utility it came with as per instructions, i.e. put on software / drivers first then put in card. That all worked with no problems. There was initially no connection, nothing found apart from neighbours unprotected BTvoyager connection!

I found update for said PCI card which apparently has known issues with XP SP2 (oooh there is a surprise eh). However, before putting on new driver, I thought I would try moving the base station for wireless phone which was quite near to router. That sorted it, picked signal immediatley.

I then decided in my infinate wisdom to update the driver anyway, as it did say there was an issue with SP2. This corrupted half way through, some of the files couldn't be read (something datacab I think). But it did remove the previous drivers and utility. ARGH!

The machine then switched it's self off. Got the error code listed below.

I have tried taking card out, rolling back the system with restore to the day before the card was installed. Then reinstalling. Basically it works until you try and use the recomended Netgear smart wireless settings utility. When that opens at start up, it comes up with a 'disable windows XP configuration manager' as soon as you instruct that to either disable or enable windows, the machine switches off. It's infront of this webpage as I speak just sitting there. I just wanted to get this post in before PC shuts down again.

Any network wizards know my wireless woes?

Would really appreciate some help, networking isn't my bag!
