Question Accessing a PC hard drive using a laptop?

I use a laptop instead of a desktop and I need to retrieve some old files from the hard drive that was in my desktop.

Obviously a desktop HD and a laptop HD are different, how can I access the desktop HD using a laptop?

Obviously you cant just connect it up can you?

tia.

yep with just a wire

or you could tape it to your laptop lid and connect it as an external drive

Assuming your desktop HD is no longer in the PC you could use a USB 3.5" hard drive caddy.

Which, in a roundabout kinda way, is exactly what IM just said

Aye

to do it by cable, get a cross-over ethernet cable if both have a network socket and connect by IP address

That's of course assuming his desktop still works? Does it, if so then yeah network 'em? If you just have the hard disk itself then as mentioned some sort of caddy, ideally USB, is required.

Either USB caddy or skip the caddy and get a USB to IDE widget like this:

Ebuyer used to sell them cheaper, so a scout round should turn up a cheaper source.

I've got one of these:

And it came with an adapter to run 2.5 inch disks off it as well.
Very handy and used many times for just the job you're talking about.

I know where analboy is LOL

I'm sure if he wanted to cover his tracks he'd put "son of satan" inside his desktop and let it rip in a field of sheep some where
