Default Good Graphics Card?

I currently have a 128Mb GeForce 3 Ti graphics card in one of my PC's and it's only running a AMD 1700.

Looking at putting in a new P4 Motherboard with a P4 HT Processor of some sort with a nice big SATA drive but without going silly I would like to upgrade my graphics card too as the games are getting a bit jerking on the newer ones when turning the resolution up a bit.

Whats a good graphics card these days? I don't want to go mad and spend £200+ etc something around the £100 mark, give or take a little?

Slightly more expensive but I would look at the Nvidia 6600GT which should keep you going for a while. You may want to consider an AMD processor Faster performance for less £££.. I would also recommend a PCI express mobo as it will be future proofed longer.

Have a look at www.overclockers.co.uk as a guide to all the cards

another vote for Nvidia 6600GT, can pick one up for about £110 in PCI-E guise or £120-130 if you need an AGP one.

Another quite good one is the ATI Radeon 9600 XT 256 Mb onboard
(one of those recommended for half life 2 as well) a tad under £100

I recently purchased a 6800 (NON GT), it's slightly faster that the 6600GT and is better speced - for about the same price. I paid £115 about 3 months ago (AGP version).

My previous card was a 9600 Pro - which just wouldn't cut it with doom3 and HL2 with all the goodies turned on.

Hmmm, well the 6800 Nvidia seems to be the one to go for but I can't seem to find them anywhere near £110? most over £200??

Whats the difference between AGP and this new PCI-E or whatever it's called?

AGP=Stable, cheap, plenty of choice, same performance as PCI-E and lastly will work in your existing motherboard

PCI-E=New(some stability issues), fewer cards around, same performance as AGP, more potential(Sli etc) and needs a new motherboard

If you're not into games just internet etc, then no point in going PCI-E IMHO

Picked up an Asus 6600GT last week and its pretty astounding going from a 64MB GF3 card.

the 6600GT is native to PCI-E so an AGP version has extra architecture to make it into an AGP card - this does affect performance.

I couldn't find any non GT 6800 in PCI-E and the GT cards start at something like £300 odd. An AGP 6800LE can be unlocked but its not guaranteed.

If your replacing everything go for PCI-E and a 6600GT. If staying with AGP get a 6800LE and see if you can unlock it - you'll be unlucky if you can't.
