I'm running a Windows XP Professional Corporate Edition PC and I think my BIOS need upgraded as I've just rebuild the pc.

I've found the updated version of BIOS for my board and I've created a boot disk so it'll give me the A:>.

But I don't really know what to do next? Tried accessing the C:> where the files are but it's "invalid".

Your help is much appreciated.

There are differnet ways: the site you got the BIOS from should tell you how to do it. Assuming the BIOS came as a .ZIP file, what has it unpacked to? It will usually be two to four files. They should all go on that same boot floppy, but can you just list the unzipped files here which should tell us how your computer does this.

Each different motherboard manufacturer has a different way of doing it. It's pretty usual to do it from a boot disk, but some can now do it from in windows.

Usual boot disk method is make the boot disk, unzip the files to the disk, boot from it, then run the flash program. Some manufacturers provide a batch file so you can do it all from one command.

It's a bit difficult to give a complete answer, as you don't tell us what make of motherboard you are running.

I've created a boot disk and have unzipped the updated BIOS files onto the disk as well (not in a folder). I've also got a copy of the unzipped files on the C:> as well just incase I needed them on the C:>.

Unless you are having problems, I wouldn't recommend upgrading the BIOS. You could create problems you don't currently have.

Since upgrading my BIOS and one or 2 other changes, my PC keeps resetting itself. I have now returned to the original BIOS.

There is a certain element of truth in that: flashing the BIOS carries a risk of borking the board completely if you get it wrong. If the board is working fine, then think carefully about whether you need to.

Next thing, it looks like MSI have a Windows-based BIOS flash tool - it should be on the CD that came with the comp. If not, you ought to be able to get it from MSI. Doing this via Windows is much less risky.

Otherwise, unzip the file you downloaded to the boot floppy, then list the files it has unpacked. Once I see those I should be able to guess the routine.

I think it's a universal rule that if you have to ask how to flash the bios that you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. Especially when you quote the operating system and not the mobo spec.

If you are happy to experiment and live with the consequences then fine. However, if you rely totally upon the pc working or you (or any member of the family) have a project with a deadline looming in the next 3 months then DON'T DO IT.

As DJ140 has already (and he should know http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthrea...=405267&page=2) said there are very very few reasons for anyone to upgrade the bios at all. If it's working then leave it alone is my advice.

Dont, for the love of god, flash the bios, overclock it to within an micron of its life and then complain it broke!
