Cant save Ive heard of such an offer. Seeing as your are paying BT for the physical phone line connected to your house I dont see how you can get out of paying this other than a) phone line with a different telco b) your Phone company pays BT as part of your price plan.

You need a line provider such as Internet Telecom. They take "lines" from BT Wholesale so you no longer get a BT bill. You can then chose any ADSL ISP.

Cheap up to 8Mb Broadband, Cheap Calls, save money vs BT - Pipex Homecall

8mg unlimited broadband - free 24hr local and national calls, reduced mobile and international calls.

All the above including line rental - £28

Works fine for me, but you will need to use RC4 encryption for torrents as its supplied by pipex

Yip, the lauch of WLR3 (whole sale line rental)

Cp will rent lines from BT wholesale, BT are transfering 50,000 per day with the whole of the UK completed by 2010.

Your new CP needs to have their own equipment installed in the exchange also. Or your new CP needs to rent equipment from a larger CP who has equipment in the BT exchange. Expect smaller areas to be done alot later!

This equipment costs mega money.

wait till you want a second line or even a first line in your house...... no more where would you like it sir? It now gets installed where we (engineers) find it easiest and a maximum of 3 meters from the entry point.

pipex phoned me not long back.

They offered me 8meg, no download limits, phone calls % line rental for £30.

It doesnt seem to say anything on the website about the line rental though.

wholesale line rental (WLR) and carrier pre-select (CPS) have been around for some time. Telco's have the option of providing your line rental and call charges by WLR & CPS. All make sense as we move more and more to single service provider for Broadband, telephone, TV and in the case of Virgin Media, mobile too. Also means you get one bill, rather than one from the telco and one from BT for your line rental.

You dont save on line rental, you pay that to your telco provider.

The reason why I'm looking at Vodafone is that of shockingly rude customer service from Pipex.

+ I've already got a Voda contract

Beware with Pipex - their Direct Debit system can leave an awful lot to be desired! The actual broadband service is very reliable though

Thats just over 3 miles, just to point out your provider does not have a hand in how relaiable the line is. Only your connection through their gateways.

You could have a line 5 miles long, if the plant in the ground is 0.9 copper then it will work alot faster than somone who lives 2 miles from the exchange with 0.5 alloy and a 0.5 copper mix.

Just remember that what it says you should get is not correct, its only theory. If you have a few hundred meters of alloy cable then you WILL have a slower BB connection, you will never know if alloy is a part of the line that serves your area/house, only engineers know this and it wont be swapped out until the cable fails completey In the middle of a length.

Sorry for thread hijack

So do any of these places actually provide a good overall service. Lots of people recommend Zen for an ISP, but they charge around £25 just for BB. Its great BB, but its starting to look ever more expensive when you can get an overall package for £30 a month including your calls.

That's good to hear - I go live next week. The modem turned up today (shame I don't need it - but it was free anyway! )

So far, VERY impressed with the service...... and I'm not even connected!

Roll on 3rd May

Homecall/Pipex im with them and you have to be very careful with their FairUsagePolicy otherwise they will put you on a connection with 49 other heavey downloaders and your internet connection will become just about un-usable. The Policy states that you can only transfer 1Gb of data between the hours of 6pm-11pm Mon-Sun, now if you know anything 1Gb is Jack**** if your on a 8Mb connection i have been stung so many times with this policy and its a pain in the **** and there is nothing you can do about it.

Melon.
