Question Old skool text based computer games???

Does anyone remember these. You started in like a DOS window and then a few lines of text appeared explaining the environment you were starting in. you then had to type certain commands to progress through the game like n for north etc and pick up (obvious ) Basic though they were, for some reason I quite enjoyed playing them. I seem to recall playing such a game on somthing like a ZX Spectrum. Are there any out there that can be downloaded and played on todays PC's???

Hopefully someones knows what I'm on about

You need to go one step further, and enter the realm of ASCII-based games like the God-like Nethack

But wasn't there one on the Commodore64 called Adventure?

Anyone remember an obscure c64 adventure called 'Quest of Merravid' ?

We got obsessed by it, I learnt how to crash it and alter the code (was basic), saved it and left it for my dad with some choice additional lines of dialogue !
