ok i've seen this before..unlock your task bar and then drag and move it to the top of your desktop, can you see the icons now?
Its hard to explain but from what i remeber you have made your taskbar taller and you can only see half of it, you need to click and drag it to shrink it again..

when did it start happening? did you install some other software? is your video driver up to date? Does it happen with all programs or only certain programs? (like excel or MS photo editor - seem similar probs with those) etc etc, not much info to go on

Depends if u have it turned on or not, its in the system folder from the start menu.
Any programs u've installed from the last time XP automatically stored a restore point would be lost yes. Everything else will be the same and you won't lose any personal data. But if ure PC was working say a week/days ago, then it would fix the taskbar problem.
If u have system restore on u need to see when the last restore point was saved, n restore the latest one. If that doesnt fix the taskbar then u'd need to restore an earlier restore point n see if that works.

Last resort, do an XP repair from the CD, you'll have to reinstall all yer apps and settings though.
if i do an XP repair, will i lose all my files?? ie i-tunes, pics, vids etc...?
not too fussed about settings, although getting all the drivers again will be a pain in the ***!

Have you checked this? http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm
Checked the third item down in the list. It leads to a .vbs script that is safe to run that might help.
Or just download and use the tool on the above page
