Default date format in Excel

I have an excel spreadsheet that i use as an ODBC source from which i run a mail merge. the letter in word extracts a date from the xls sheet but in the actual mail merge document the date format does not cross over to the word document and instead of following the dd/mm/yyyy format in the xls sheet the word document produces yy/mm/dd:hr.min.sec

regional settings are UK English

Anyone give me a solution of point me in the right direction of an faq.

i am running xp pro with office 2003.

cheers
