Attempted PC Break In

Attempted PC Break In
At the thought of looking silly, I've got to ask if this makes sense.
Last night chatting away at a chat room when suddenly Nortons security system on my PC kicks in flashing in red - external PC attempting to break in to your computer. This has been blocked from further attempts for the next 30 minutes. Well after having heart failure I investigated the options within Nortons and it gives me the IP address of the offender and offers me a geographical identification. It comes up with a place in California.
My question;
Is my PC taking the p**s?
How can someone break in?
should I take any further precautions?
Who should I report this to, if anyone?
Why does someone want to do it?
And how can Nortons track them across the world?
Worried Kevin

Sounds to me as though Norton looked after you. People scour the net looking to see if there are computers that are accessible - and if they are they will play about with you... They have software that hits randomly and quickly. IP adressess are logged so to pinpoint them is not difficult
Don't worry, it's not personal

if you turn on all notifications of intrusion attempts you'll get 50-60 per hour every hour your on the net, fact of life.
If nortan finds and blocks it don't worry about it.

I installed a 3 month trial of Norton IS (came with new Asus Mobo) last weekend when a Worm took over my machine. Dealt with it in no time at all and the firewall part is really quite good.
Will prob pay the sub renewal at the end of my 3 months.
A few people on here say they have had problems running it but my machine likes it so far.
Cheers,
Simon.
