Default PC making a clicking noise?

Hi all,

I have a pc that I bought last year from special reserve, one of their maxx 4dv jobbies, spent a few quid on it - now its out of warrenty.

I have had some issues with it, crashing out of games etc, blue screen of death every now and then, one of them saying something along the lines of bad data pool or something......

Anyway, something I have noticed more recently is that the pc makes a clicking noise, on and off, sporadically, the only way I can liken the sound is something similar to when you were at school and saw the electric current jump from 2 metal rods etc (am i explaining this right?), it doesnt seem to cause any issues at the moment as I am not running any games.

After a massive crash where the pc just wouldnt work any more (service pack 2), I have had the maching completely re formatted and put back to the beginning.

The clicking noise is bugging me though, any ideas?

And I dont think there is a grasshopper trapped inside

the only sort of clicking sound ive heard of & thats from the harddrives, put them into standby mode does it still happen. Does it happen after awhile, could be heat expansion (actually metal normal ticks when cooling doesnt it?). could even be something is rubbing against one of your fans.

Youve just got the take the lid off & stick your ear in & have a listen around

IBM Deskstar hard disks (or Death Stars as they are known) had a tendency to "click" when they were getting close to total failure. Might be something like that.

I'm with IWatkins here: sounds like the HDD is about to die. Make sure everything is backed up, then get another. If your computer shop gave you all the disks I'd advise you to fit the new HDD yourself, or get a nerd friend to do it - save you a LOT.
