Question Help, Wireless Laptop not Talking to W/L Router

Hope as ever someone can help.

I'm just setting up my wireless network at home but my laptop doesn't seem to pick up my router and vice versa.

I have a Netgear DG834G ADSL router, which I have connected to my laptop via a network cable to configure, and it works fine.

During configuration on the wireless settings the router does not detect my laptops wireless card, so I have added the MAC address manually to the list of allowed devices. However they still do not seem to see each other and I can't get on the net wirelessly only with the network cable, which defeats the purpose.

From my laptops point of view it has a LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter, I've set it to automatically detect TCP, DNS settings etc and also it is set to the same channel as the router, but all to no avail.

Any help or pointers in terms of getting them talking would be good.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have Wep encryption enabled ? If you do you have to make sure the same key is set on the laptop as desktop computer. Do you have Windows Xp on both computers ? Because I have found a wireless network is a LOT easier to set up with SP2.

is there a tick in "enable wireless acces point" ???

Get a program called netstumbler....... this will identify if the router is in fact sending out a signal..

Question

Chris, Yeah WEP enabled and both laptop & router have the same numbers.

Phil, Yip, Wireless Access Point Enabled.

I will be fitting the PCI card to my desktop later and will see if the router picks that up, if not I'll look into whether or not the router is sending out a signal.

Cheers

don't you have to go into the router via cable to set it to the same wep settings as the lappy?

You might have to fiddle with the WEP key settings, my existing Wifi lan was working but a new laptop wouldnt connect, even though all the settings were correct and proven on other pc's. Ended up reconfiguring the routers Key setting from Shared to Open to get the new latop to connect, this also meant all other previously working pc's had to be reconfigured to match.

Thumbs up

Thanks to all that have responded.

Basically I configired the router via an ethernet cable with my laptop no problem, my desktop with it's PCI card can talk to the router so I've concluded that the wireless device in my laptop is not working properly, and will have to look at getting it sorted, at least I now know what the problem is.

Cheers

You may want to turn off "allow windows to manage my wireless network" and use the software that came with the laptop.

I've had problems with this setting on serveral PC's and laptops.

If you've not already tried, enter the WEP key manually as hex. My old laptop wouldn't connect using a passphrase, but connected instantly when the hex equivalent was entered.

Agree with this. My sister had a problem connecting to her 834G, stopped Windows setting the wireless NW up, reset the router, using the button on the back and voila it worked!

She was about to sell the router on Ebay, she was so stressed with it.

Default Wireless

Any chance the Router is just broadcasting in the wireless G standard and your laptop is Wirless B so does not see it.
My laptop is G and a mates is B and with netstumbler he doesn't see half as many access points as me.

Just a stab ?? ??
