Angry Why won't both network adapters work at the same time?

Trying to sort out a problem for my neighbour, he's got 2 machines both running XP, the main machine connects wirelessly to a modem/router. He has a 2nd machine that he wants to use for storage and has connected it to his main machine using a crossover cable. I can ping the 2nd machine from the first but cannot ping the gateway or anything else unless I disable the ethernet adapter in the main machine, once disabled the main machine can ping the gateway and get on the net etc but obviously cannot connect to the 2nd machine. As soon as I enable the ethernet adapter again only thing I can ping is the 2nd PC.

I'm sure I've read something about this somewhere but I can't for the life of me find it now, pls help

Don't know if it's the same with XP, but earlier versions of Windows didn't like having 2 network cards in the same machine with IP addresses on the same subnet. Is that a possibility?

Change the ip range between the storage pc and the main pc and don't add any default gateways to that interface.

Thumbs up

cheers for the replies guys, that sounds like it might work as all network adapters are currently set with the same subnet and default gateway, I'll let you know
