Installation files on a disk partition or folder (could be hidden) and the activation code on a piece of card that came with the computer or on a sticker on the case?

Last edited by SJ_Skyline; 22 December 2004 at 12:02 PM. Reason: added the files could also be on a hidden/system folder somewhere.

Probably the same as Compaq - you should have a recovery CDROM with HP logos all over it. And as Rich said, the WinXP licence key will be on a sticker on the side or top or rear of the case.

PS. the CDROM relys on the recovery partition Rich mentioned too.

Carrying on from above, if the files are stored locally then there is probably a folder called i386 lurking around somewhere with most of the files in it. So that is where I would start a search.

I have the activation code & have found the i386 folder. Is it possible to reinstall Windows without the recovery disc? Also the folder is not on a separate partition so how do you go about formatting the hard drive?

Cheers,

Darren

I had a customer in to me last week with an HP machine.

Diagnosed a gubbed HDD.

The recovery files were in a FAT23 partition and could not be read.

HP won't honour the warranty until a full OS re-installation had been attempted.

HP ship their PC's without a recovery CD and i've since learned that the punter in question is being forced to purchase the CD at £30 even although i gave him a technicians report stating the HDD was gubbed.

Found the info needed off the HP website. Apparently if you press F10 when the BIOS screen appears you get the Recovery menu up & can do a Destructive Recovery, wiping & reinstalling Windows.
