Default Redhat Linux - booting to command mode

Hello

I installed VMware on my XP PC yesterday and installed a RH Enterprise Linux 3.0 guest partition. I need to install VMWare tools but must do this with XFree86 not running, so how do I boot Linux to command line mode ? I tried an init s from a command window but no joy.

P.S. Forgot to say at install time I selected to use GNOME and to do a graphical login.
