Vaio laptop CD drive problems
Hi,
It looks like the DVD/CD on my Vaio has gone t^ts up. Was burning cds great then nowt. It won't even read a Windows CD - ried several - just whirrs away and flashes its light .....
And it's out of warrenty. Too late to google and stuff tonight so asking any good SNers on the night shift - where's the best/cheapest place to get a replacement? Not that cheap is necessarily the answer as it is a work one ....
Oh, and quick!
Cheers
Dave
PS: any problems in replacing it or should I get it done 'professionally'??? :-)

Hi,
BTTT as I haven't yet got anywhere with this ... except that CDs seem fine (except for horrible clonking noises ... !!) but DVDs don't work. And I have rebuilt the machine from scratch over Xmas (SW wise ...). No change to the symptoms.
Any clues as to where to get a drive??
Cheers

OLd threads obviously never die - just wait to get resurrected by the search button .... :-)
Yep - sounds like what happened to mine. I only got one original drive hit and that was from: http://www.laptopsolutions.plc.uk/uj..._mechanism.htm
Try them - they may have your's in stock. But they're pricey. Mine had a duff battery as well - fully charged it would run out in 20 mins ... It would have been over £300 in parts alone to fix my lappie up and I managed to persuade work to get me another. Went for a DELL this time ...
I also persuaded work they didn't want the old one back so now the wife has her very own laptop - useless for taking anywhere mobile but fine at home as I have a wireless network setup ....
Oh, you may be able to get parts cheaper but I couldn't see where ....
Cheers

Yes mate, the mighty search button comes good again.
The laptop's only 6 weeks old so it's well under warranty but thanks of the info, I'll hold onto it for later. Paid extra for a vaio as my mates got one and swears by it, me , I'm swearing at it.
Never mind, looks like I'll be needing a new drive then.

I got a vaio a couple of years ago pcg-fx405, and funny thing was it has a matsu-****-a drive too. Why any compant would want to put these drives into their machines is beyond me. After mine started to fail i had a look on the web to see how much a replacement one was, and found out that the particular model number of drive i had, seemed to be a widespread occurance with all vaio owners having the same drive, and different variations of it.
Anyways, just left it in its sorry state and never bothered to replace it untill i had to re-install xp for other reasons. In the end i got a lacie external ubs2/firewire cd writer. To date its the fastest drive i have seen (even though it is just a rebadged lite-on). So now even if that fails, its only gonna cost me about 15 sheets for a replacement writer.
Job Done.
