DO NOT BUY HALF-LIFE2 ON EBAY
or any other online action.
clicky
"There are a number of people selling Steam Accounts (HL2, Bronze, Silver, Gold) on EBay. DO NOT PURCHASE THEM:
1. It is against our EULA to sell Steam Accounts
2. They are either Stolen accounts or opened with stolen credit cards.
3. The accounts will be closed and we have been informed that PayPal / EBay will *NOT* help since no merchandise physically changed hands."

when you buy half-life2 you are not buying the game. . . . you are buying a "Steam account" which has access to play the games ascoiciated with it. If you buy the "retail" version - IE a CD from the shops - the same still applies, you just don't have to spend days downloading the media - you still have to create a steam account.
If you are a legit seller, selling the media & your steam account you *should* be ok, but it is very much buyer beware.
People are selling:
- cracked HL2 only (no CS or on-line play) - bypasses STEAM alltogethor.
- a Steam account purchased with a stolen credit card
- a Steam account made with the stolen / generated CD key
How can you be sure the above is not the case when you are buying on-line?
One of my "not so web aware" friends got caught out.
