dlynch: have you used that tweak prog on BT with a good result ? ...... I'm getting 1.1mbps straight out of the box and don't know whether I should fiddle with it or not.

I had lots and lots of problems when i first got ADSL years ago with BT. Eventually it was down to there network hardware and issued a statement advising to change MTU values. MTU and the receive window make drastic changes to your download speed and if it is running fine you are best to just leave well alone.
Bit hard to run through the MAC and WEP security as it is different on every router.
Every network card has a unique MAC address a series of HEX numbers. No other card in the world has that MAC address (Although it is on some cards possible to manually change) At the command prompt a command of ipconfig /all will display the Physical address of the card (MAC ADDRESS). try in your router config to find relevance to this.
WEP encryption will also be a setting you can find find in the router config. It is basically a shard key security system. You specify the KEy on the router and then specify the key on your PC. Only this key alllows people to connect. I know that is not 100% correct but i hope it helps.
Email me for specific routers etc .. i will try and help.
My current Speed test results are :
Downstream 920 Kbps (115.0 KB/sec) 993 Kbps (inc. overheads) Upstream 216 Kbps (27.0 KB/sec) 233 Kbps (inc. overheads)
