DSL broadband is getting better too:
It has been a while coming, but it is here now, and is to be available on 230 exchanges around the UK. What is it? Well 8Mbps ADSL, with a 400kbps upstream for a price of just £39.99 a month. More details on their website at www.ukonline.net/8000.

The only problem I have with ADSL suppliers is the contention ratios and download restrictions.
I big pat on the back for Blueyonders commitment to unlimited use

And are cable ratios better than 33:1 my adsl is 50:1, I had blueyonder before this and can't notice any difference, in fact BY was down much more often than this and I lost connection a lot more than adsl.
In fact I was paying £39 for 1mb line when it came out, so i'd happily part with that for 8mb/400k.

I know the BY services varies across the country. I've had it for the best part of 3 years now and it's been down twice in that time. I've never known it to slow down during and so-called busy periods.
Do you have a cap on your downloads??

NTL are upgrading again in the new year,
Speeds are to be increased significantly, whilst remaining at the same prices. Also note the bandwidth caps that apply to each speed in brackets.
300K 1MB – £17.99. (5GB* monthly usage allowance)
750K 2MB – £24.99. (30GB* monthly usage allowance)
1.5MB 3MB – £37.99. (40GB* monthly usage allowance)
These speeds will be rolled out to new customers in first quarter of 2005. Existing customers can upgrade to these new speeds by paying a £25 administration fee.

I'm mostly happy with BlueYonder. They were a bit flaky a year ago but great now. About time that they increased the upload speed though, I may even move to the 3/4meg service as a result.
8meg ADSL looks tempting though, but the whole setup is annoying as first I have to pay BT to activate the BT line to my flat (which proved difficult as there is no phone number allocated to it so they can't find it) then after doing so I can get them to test it and even if it fales I'm stuck with 3 months line rental and an activation fee.
Can the unbundled stuff do anything better on this front, also how do I find out which exchange I would be on?

Ditto - another v. satisfied BY customer. Couldn't live (or work!) without it.
And the more speed increases they give us, the better........ as Steve said, 1 to 1.5 to 2 Mb - and all in the space of about a year. Great stuff.
Continuing not to impose any DL restriction is also great - I'd struggle if they did implement a limit. However, an increase in the upstream would help - as it's STILL only 256K (I notice that they've kindly upped the new 4Mb upstream to 384K - How generous!)

Another happy BY customer here! Speed increase again is gret news. Used their services for 3+ years and rarely get any trouble. If the network goes down its always up and running within 24 hours.

Yeah, the price could look at being adjusted given the rate ADSL has caught up.
The two reasons they can get away with it (sorry, look more competitive) is the fact that the don't cap your daily downloads and won't disconnect you (intentionaly) after a certain period of time online.

will BY work with my existing Linksys WAG54G wireless router / modem ?
Having seens a friends, standard installation - it includes:
- a wall socket with cable that terminates with a bespoke connector INTO the BY modem
- a LAN cable that goes from BY modem into PC
so where does the Linksys router fit into the equation ?

What you need, is a different Linksys router - the WRT54G. Around 50 quid. Does exactly the same thing as your WAG54G, but has an Ethernet WAN port (that the cable modem ethernet cable will plug directly in to) instead of an ADSL modem.
So - get the WAG54G on Ebay, and buy a WRT54G...

Just read on the media guardian that
"French consumers are able to buy broadband at 15Mb speed for about £20 a month"
http://media.guardian.co.uk/city/sto...354282,00.html
Another case of rip off Britain?

Yay faster net access for me :luxhello
Although currently on 750, which was originally upgraded from 500 -TBH that didn't make much difference. Normally I have problems with slow server or DNS response. DL's are slightly quicker
Would I be better off using an alternate DNS server? if so list the IP's please
As for BY's service I can't knock 'em now. When we had it first installed they made a right pigs ear of it, but these days they seem to be as good or better than everyone else
