Fubared Laptop HDD Drive
Can anyone recommend the best course of action to recover a file from one of my laptops ?
Its a Toshiba laptop (can't remember specs - about 2-3 years old now), when trying to boot it post's then says 'Wi' on the screen, thats it . . . . Not sure why, maybe the start of 'Windows...' or perhaps 'Wibble', who knows.
No real grinding noises, but it does sound as if the HDD is trying to read but failing. Tried to boot in Safe Mode with no luck, freezes at the same point.
I assume that if I can even start the Windows Safe Mode selection screen thingy then maybe all is not lost?
I only need one Word Document back from the HDD, but it is important that I do so (GF will kill me otherwise )
So . . . I'm going to try booting from floppy and running scandisk etc. But does anyone recommend any programs that I can boot from floppy and attempt to recover the file or entire disk ?
Many thanks,
Dunk

You can stick it in a converter so that you can read it like a normal hdd in a desktop machine. Might be useful ? Depending how important that data is, and how quickly you need it I can recommend a company called Data Clinic. They recovered an 80 gigger for us a few weeks back and the entire drive cost about £400 as a rough guide.
