Loads of linux questions
Need to build a couple of Linux boxes.
One is an internal web proxy based to compare with our existing ISA 2004 server.
What Kernel would you recommend to run with Squid Cache?
Also are there good, free content filters out there for Squid?
Second is a sendmail box. Again, what kernel would you recommend and do you know of any good spam filtering software that can use something like Spamhaus??
I have SUSE 9.1 Personal, Mandrake 10 & Fedora Core 2 to try out.
Finally, how do you go about configuring software RAID?? Do you create a single RAID partition or must you create seperate partitions and only mirror mount points like root?? i.e. you can't mirror /swap or /boot ??

Any recent kernel will be fine as long as it's configured correctly for your machine, the default should be fine. Any tuning can be done afterwards (like IPC settings, filesystem tuning or whatever your apps may need).
I only know of this for Squid but I've not tried it before.
I prefer Exim over Sendmail but that's up to you Only spam filtering I've used is SpamAssassin, works pretty well. Can't help with software RAID, only used hardware.
Steve.

For the raid, you create individual partitions, put the details of which partitions go to which raid devices into /etc/raidtab then run mkraid to make the raid devices.
The kernel then detects them as /dev/md0 /dev/md1 etc. at boot time, so / and /boot can be mirrored if you choose.
Not all linux distros put raid support into the kernel used on the install CD however, but if you are mirroring rather than raid5 you can mirror the drives after install.
