Setting up an online shop.
How easy is it to start an online shop?
Thought about this years ago and so cheesed off with work that the idea has come back again.
Basically - create a database of stock (probably in MS Access) then have a website where people can buy using Paypal, credit cards or whatever and have the computer sort out all the money moving and update the database as necessary.
suggestions welcome.

oscommerce.com will do all that off the bat, and its free. The bog standard look is ok but if you want some good customisation I can recommend a friend who does excellent work and is damn cheap (cause he works in $ )

Messiah,
Have a look at http://www.performanceparts4u.com/ this is a basic shop product with a hook into Worldpay (although this site doesn't use the hook). The site also has a web enabled back giving the shop owner the ability to update the product catalogue, upload images, manage customers, etc. etc.
If you like what you see then please drop me a PM.

Thanks for the offers but I'm quite keen at having a go myself - I've got dreamweaver and reckon I can knock up the website myself (design's in my head).
Would prefer to now all the in's & out's of the site's working's and the only way to do that is to do it myself.

With respect, what's your business - selling stuff or building a web site?
http://www.actinic.co.uk/ is fine for a lot of people - you don't need to know how it works - it just does!
A decent shopping site is pretty complex to build from the ground up...
...just noted the 30-day free trial...gotta be worth a play

I'm just about to do the same thing at work. We will be using Actinic cos it seems well thought of and is easy for no nothings like us. At £800ish it's not too bad either. We will be obviously using a payment processor like Worldpay or whoever but that is yet to be decided.
Will be installing the 30 day trial tomorrow
Good luck with whatever you go with
