Which DVD writer ?
My HP DVD300n that was standard in my Compaq PC has thrown in the towel.
First it would'nt read CD's now it's creating faults with DVD's..... Nero say's power calibration error
so what drive do I want to replace it ? Pioneer 108 is only £55 on dabs, any good
Craig.

Yup the 108 is what I have just bought, dual layer - dual layer disks are only £7.99 each at the moment LOL
or the new samsung dual layer burner..
The 108 was £50 on ebuyer IIRC

I have been running a 107 for the last 12mths with no problems at all, I will definitely be sticking with Panasonic when the time arrives to upgrade, can't fault them at all..

I would say best ones are - NEC 3510a (reads and writes anything out the box)
then pioneer 108, (only good compatibility with firmware update)
I have had them all, sony,LG,pioneer,NEC, artec, phillips.

I've had two Pioneers die on me recently (a 106 and a 107) after not being worked too hard. I'm trying an NEC 3510a now (dual layer, +/- formats etc), and so far it seems much more reliable...

Pioneer and NEC are the only two brands worth considering (IMO) if you are looking for a replacement.
Saying that, i'm awaiting stock of the new Samsung 16x/DL burner. Cheap as chips but can't comment on performance yet.
If their DVD-ROM (Si-616) is anything to go by, they should be top-notch burners.

108 is 57 quid from www.121cdr.co.uk and the DL disks are 4.49 or thereabouts (Worth waiting a while until the price comes down me thinks!!)
I have a Pioneer 106 which has performed faultlessly for over 12 months now. A friend of mine had an A03 die on him recently so that's another Pioneer drive to add to the home in the sky!!
Good luck
Nick

I'll try some better CDR's before I change the drive but for £60 looks like the 108 is a bit of a no brainer to me.
Cheers for the info chaps
Craig.

Well chuffed with my -/+ compatible LG GSA-4082B. Bought it from Ebuyer and no compatibility issues with RiDisc purple Ritek die DVD-R from the same source. Both at very competitive prices.

Please beware when committing drives to the graveyard.
I have used my Pioneer 103 for a number of years (and written in excess of 1000 discs) now without any issues apart from just recently after buying some x4 media which is doesnt like (getting the power calibration error). This is not the drive, but only the media (I have today got hold of some x2 media and it is fine again). I have applied the latest firmware update, but am still having problems with this specific disc type I have just purchased.
Nothing wrong with the drive par se, but I realise it may now be the time to upgrade and I will be going to a 108 to ensure full compatiability with media (as I am paying £18 for 100 discrite x4 DVD-R's, so need to upgrade to make the most of the media at the prices I am able to source).
Regards,
Shaun.

Discrite, along with the majority of the Medea International disc range are pretty poor.
You will notice this in a few months as the longevity of the dye used in manufacture is low.
