Default Athlon 3.5 installation.

Hi

I recently upgraded my pc from an,

Athlon 2800, Radeon 9700 Pro, 1024 3200, Asus A7n8X D/X

to,

Athlon 64 3.5 (socket 939), Radeon X800 Pro, 1024 3200, Asus A8V DX

I was previously getting 9900ish on 3d Mark 2003 default, but only scored 8800ish with the new setup.

So I'm assuming something somewhere isn't set up correctly, any experts give me some advice?

Thanks in advance.

(Gonna do a time demo in Doom 3 later, previously got 29.3).

Edit - Demo 1 - 21 48 frames in 50.0 secs, 42.9fps - seems pretty fast

Can't understand pap score in 3dMark

GOOner,

I have just upgraded to a 3800+ A64 and same graphics card and must admit I smashed the scores you got??

3dMark2003 was something over 12,000
Doom3 was 55fps with everything on (except AA), ultra detail at 1600x1240

?????

Have you downloaded the latest ATI or Omega drivers? This makes a HUGE difference in performance (like you wouldnt believe). You should be on at least 4.8 catalysts.

Regards,
Shaun.

Hi Shaun,

I'm running Cat 3.9's currently, I think the radeon drivers are still based on 3.8's, or they were last time I looked.

I must have something in the bios set up wrong, I can't actually find anyway of altering the multiplier, although bios and Windows show the cpu as a 3.5.

Think I'll have a good look on the Asustek forums to see if i'm missing something.

Cheers.

Thumbs up

From what I remember - aren't the 3500/3800 locked/limited multipler wise - its only the FX53 that is fully unlocked. Theres not much in the bios you can change*, but download CPUZ to check that processor is running at the correct speed. I found I had to manually set the optimum memory settings in the bios on the A8V.

You should be using CATs 4.8 or 4.9 ideally.. that score is very low.

With ASUS A8V + 3500 + 1GB 3700 + 6800GT

3Dmark03 = 12323

I'm sure others will have more technical input for you.

Rgds, Alex
* or should I say, is set wrong CPU wise initially

I think (but could be wrong), that the Athlon64s are only partially multiplier locked (except for the FX ones which are totally unlocked) - you can adjust it down but not up. So you could increase the FSB frequency and reduce the multiplier to give the same overall CPU frequency, but performance may be improved because of the higher FSB speed.

Yeah thats what I mean

I think the 3500 has a max of 11 doesn't it?

There is no way you could get 9000+ with that old setup

Damn memory of mine, perhaps it was 6900ish on the old system? my memory is getting worse I swear.

Still seems the new setup is scoring low, perhaps I'll get the shop where I brought the bits to take a look, I'm only an amateur at this kinda thing.

I presume you did a fresh install of the operating system?

Shaun.
