Question Games console for the kids: PS2 or Xbox?

Looking at buying a games console for the kids (age 10 and 6). The types of games they play are the Harry Potter series, Simpsons Hit & Run, DanceMat etc.

Which would be the better option in terms of futureproofing, upgrades & software availability, PS2 or an Xbox?

Any & all advice / opinions gratefully received.

Ta, Craig

XBOX has far better graphics, price has just come down to £99 and you dont need to buy a memory card.

PS2, more game choice and easier to get hold of cheap copies

I own both and the xbox is the better console IMO

I've got an X-box and it’s the best £130 I ever spent. But I think the PS2 might be a better buy for kids of that age, the X-box is more of a "grown up's" console with most of the games targeted at an older age group.

Well I looked everywhere for a PS2 and most second hand 1's were going for £100 so I paid £130 for a new 1 in the end. as said the xbox is only £99 brand new now so its the better value IMO

Hang on a mo, I've just looked in my inbox at the e-mails I receive from Special Reserve. The first £99 anouncment was the PS2 followed by the X-Box a week later.

PS2 gets my vote, more games end of story. If you go for the X-box wait till your kids try using the controller, I struggle with the size of the damn thing and I'm 30!!!

Thanks all for the advice -- as my daughter really wants the Dance Mat game, which I think is only on PS2, then I've probably got no choice!

The old xbox controller was huge but the new “S” controller is one of the best out there I think

And I don’t think there would be any chance of running short on games there’s hundreds. http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/games/catalog.htm

Although as I said earlier the PS2 would probably be the best bet for kids.

The Xbox has dance mat games as well now.
For pure selection of games then the PS2 would be your best bet I reckon.

Woolworths are doing the PS2 for £99, and (IIRC) I saw an advert for Currys/Comet (or someone like that ) for a PS2 and one game for £99 or a PS2, 2 controllers and 2 games for £109 (games were of a limited selection). Never been a better time to buy one!
