Is this a drive that used to work, or a new one? If it's one that used to work I'd say replace it - they're about £8! If it's a new one, check the cable connections.

Probably just needs a clean / head misalignment, but as meridian says they are dirt cheap to replace - ebuyer do sony etc in black, beige or silver for 3.49+vat

which is cheaper than a cleaning kit.

Quick warning about Sony floppy drives: for reasons known only to Sony, the drive cable connects upside down compared to all other drives. If you have a "keyed" cable then it won't fit unless you cut the key off so you can turn the connector over. The end that goes on the motherboard goes on correctly, it's just the drive end that needs reversing. This certainly used to be true up until last year, but may have changed since.

If you're not sure, plug it in and switch on. If the drive light stays on constantly then you need to turn the connector over.
