please help, my modem (or something) don't work
basically i don't know **** about computers, so i'll try to tell you whats up.
i use AOL to get an internet connection, the other day the connection keeps dropping and a prompt appears to reconnect. i do this and evey couple of minutes this keeps appearing.
remembering something i read about things installing themselves on your computer and redirecting your dialler to a premium rate no., i spot an icon in the network connections in the control panel that wasn't there before. click on the properties and the address is from casinoplaza or something like that. i get all panicky and delete it and now my computer won't dial up.
i've deleted then reinstalled AOL and when it tries to make connection it can't and a message saying ' unable to make carrier signal' appears.
any ideas guys?

oh FFS, gone thru the AOL help list and done what they recommend. no joy.
when i click to connect, it initializes the modem, dials up, connects to internet, connects to aol then drops and redials and the same thing happens again.
am i to assume the modem and driver is ok and the fault lies with AOL?

it sounds like your computer's dial up settings, and AOL's are falling out at the username & password bit. Try reinstalling AOL, and re-enter your details to the letter.
Make sure you properley uninstall through the control panel.

is this a driver problem or is the modem fooked? i think the modem is still working of sorts coz somethimes it conects to aol then a message comes up saying somethings gone wrong with the connection and when i close the window a box comes up saying 'you've been connected to the internet' for about 2 mins
is there any way of checking if either modem or driver is working ok, if so what should i be looking for?
cheers

I don't think AOL will dial in to any other connection than an AOL server, so you might be dialling up to AOL in the first palce, then the dialler is switching over to the premium rate number. Does AOL just freeze up ?
To test your moden, got to freeserve, virgin, clara etc, and set up a free dial up, but for this you will need to connect through internet explorer, forget AOL altogether.
Diallers can be a ****** to find

My neighbour had a dialler, S&D missed it, it wasn't until the number came through on the phone bill, and I could google for it that info became available on how to get rid. The info I got, was that there wasn't any info other than horrendous phone bills, so the PC got wiped.
How many users on the PC? have you got kids smart enough to set up a dial up through IE? - maybe to get around the parental settings of AOL?

if there's only you that uses it then just bin AOL, tis a bag o' ****e anyway. you will still need to find the dialler, if that's the cause of the problem.
Have you properley uninstalled and reinstalled AOL?
