Why is my Internet connection so slow...
If I connect using a DSL router ?
It is so slow it is worse than dial up most of the time
However if I connect my PC direct to the Cable modem, it is blisteringly quick
Its on Telewest on a 1.5Mb connection
Any ideas anyone ?

also you could try reseting you cable modem whilst its conected to your router i remember my cable modem getting a memory and some times i had to ring telewest up to rest there end.
of the subject my xbox gamertag is mmnorth

I dont have Xbox live (for some strange 'chipped' reason )
Telewest no longer use registered Mac Addressess (you cant even add them anymore)
this is 4 routers now, all been reset, firmware upgrades etc etc, telewest phoned, and they dont support routers

the only thing I can think of, is that the router plugs into a hub upstairs, where my main pc is
I could try and eliminate that, to see if thats the cause of the problem, but im sure it affected my PC downstairs too
the Router is a Linksys DSL router, with 8 port built in switch

Better get the IT support in Steve!
What speed network cards are you using - 10/100?
Or are you wireless and if so is it 54G?
My SMC Baricade is superb, does wired and wireless, 100 mbps, 54g, both PCs ( hard wired with 10/100 cards ) work fast.
What windows you on, what drivers / settings you useing, are all the bindings OK ?
Is the firewall on, any error checking etc.?
Worth a look.
Or shall I send Julian round to help!!!!!

LOL @ sending Julian round
This is the 4th router I have had in as many weeks, keep sending the things back, my original one worked for 3 years flat out 24/7
Windows XP, etc etc, it works a treat plugged directly into the cable modem, but not if I plug into the router

MTU on the PC/internet settings or in the router?
If it's like mine, the router does all the handshake and transfer protocol stuff, although the PC looks after the MTU, black hole etc.
So if it worked on a direct connection to the cable modem, what would change going via router?
That's where the problem lies, something the router introduces, either settings, or other connections fighting for the bandwidth or overriding the main PC.
Have you tried powering the router down for a few minutes and then restarting it?

Havent changed the MTU settings, its set to 1500 (default)
the only thing that changes going on the router, is my internal IP address, a small 4 port hub, and a long cat5 cable (but the 4 port hub & cat5 cable are plugged directly into the cable modem at the moment) so the only thing that is different is the router itself
Never bothered powering it down, as it is brand new out of the box
most of the time there is only my PC plugged in
this cant be the 4th faulty router (not all the same makes either)

MTU should be around 1460 IIRC?
Pwoer down the router for a minute and retry.
Are you using inbuilt DNS or DHCP for the PC to router , router to outside world ? Maybe NAT issue?

i still have my old router, been using that this morning, but constant disconnects on newsgroups, but the speed is so so
reflashed my new router, got it back working again, and currently using that with MTU set to 1492 (what it was on my old router) its sort of ok, fits & starts, and occasionally my laptop loses all network connectivity, but then its a works one, filled with all kinds of stuff to break things
it would appear that lots of people have these kind of problems, and not just with linksys, and firmware updates, or downgrades can sometimes cure the problems
getting rid of the internet all together seems like the only real cure

i have BB and its slow speed 28.kbps or if i'm lucky 288.0kbps (happens once a blue moon)
the thing is that my location is too far from the exchange.and every 3-4 minutes my connection gets unpluged
so if i download something i HAVE to use getright
any tips to speed things up, or at least keep the connection going.
PS. whats a router? and what does it do?
using fairdadsl (makes any difference?)
taken from bt website
Our initial test on your line suggests that you should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides up to 512Kbps download speed, but the upstream bandwidth will vary according to the length of your telephone line. It will not be possible to provide the 1Mbps or 2Mbps ADSL broadband services.
If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable, and if so for what speed of service.
