I've been stung by loads of trojans over the past couple of days. I've used McAfee, norton, AVG, spybot and ad aware to sort most of my issues out.
It's all more or less ok, but after startup, i am unable to do anything for upto 5 minutes. The pc just appears normal but nothing can be opened. After 5 mins, anything i have tried to open does actually open and the pc acts as normal. Any suggestions?

Try spysweeper from webroot, its free and available on a quick google search

are you connected to a network. if so you can get xp to fast connect at startup. took me a while to figure that one out.

Have you got all your Windows updates installed?

Check there's nothing nasty in the Startup folder (obvious!) and also in the Registry 'Run' and 'Run Once' (both HKEY_C_U and HKEY_L_M), which is less obvious.
