Default mp3 files

Is it possible to turn a normal track from a audio cd into a mp3 file.
I have a mp3 player now. I want to put some of my cd's on to the mp3 player without having to download every single song in mp3 format. I thought it was just a case of transferring the data across from my cpmputer to the player. Once i try to play the track on it, it says "format not compatible"

Not to clued up on this at all. Any suggestion?

Cheers

Adam
