Question mate's Win XP hits 100cpu usage when he opens Iexplore or Explore

Very odd.
I've run adaware and spybot on it and removed all spyware but still happens, but doesn't happen if I boot in safe mode.
I've got him running Stinger and HijackThis at the moment but anyone else encountered this?

Hi,

What OS are they running (XP?, 98?)? Are you able to see what process is taking up the 100% (in taskmanager), is it actually explorer.exe, iexplore.exe or something else (like system) ?

Regards,

Jules

Grab process explorer from sysinternals (here) for your OS. It will give you a more detailed break down of tasks (better than task manager) that are running and how much CPU they are using. Maybe this can shed some light on it if its not actually explorer.exe ?

(oops, just read your post properly - ignore below - you tried Mozilla, Netscape?)

Trojans (a type of virus if you like) are known to do this to Internet Explorer.

I'd advise downloading a free Anti-Spyware program like Ads Aware from lavasoft

Go into DISPLAY PROPERTIES - APPEARANCE - EFFECTS and then uncheck the box about using transition effects

It's a known issue with XP.
