Default laptop advice

which laptop to buy for about £600?

must have a good enough screen and keyboard to be used instead of a desktop... and must be brand new with warranty.

i am thinking toshiba a60 as this is 2.8ghz, 256mb of memory, reasonable screen.

any help please?

600+vat or inc?

Centrino standard is nice for battery life, although a little pricier that desktop processor based laptops.

These are pretty cheap for the spec, we run a few at work

was hoping for £600 incl vat.

would be prepared to pay more for a great deal of course.

one question - i see the laptop u just posted is celeron 1.4ghz m processor. given that the one i was looking at is 2.8ghz at £100 less price, what (aside from battery life) is the point of having an m processor which runs at half the speed (or am i missing something here)?

AFAIK the M class processors use a reduced instruction set, meaning they have less work to do, so a 1.4M is equivalent to something areound the 2.6-2.8 pentium, with the advantage of running cooler AND having a longer battery life.

you need to check them out in the flesh to be honest, some cheaper laptops look very very nasty and seem they would break very easily.

i go through a lot of laptops,

currently have a toshiba 2.8ghz with 1gb memory and a 16" screen and dvd-r, is great except the weight, the plastic, the mouse and the HD is very slow. This was top of the range and I hate it. and it makes using it a pain, only another 18 months to go.

The sony Vaio's look nice but are a rip off value wise ive had 2 and wouldnt have another unless they brought out something exceptional.

some of the new dells are nice, what price are they now days ?.

The Centrino notebooks are nice because they are very light and have wirless ect built into the chipset, so they use far less battery power on the move, I would think you would struggle to get a nice centrino for 600 notes though. Interms or power there clock speed is supposedly equivelent to a p4m 60% higher. It seems true from colleagues laptops I have used. for all apps except games.
