Unhappy Memory Upgrade Problem

For about a year I've been running a Gigabyte GA-7VT600-L motherboard, which according to the specs can handle 3GB of RAM.
http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard...A-7VT600-L.htm

I have only been using one 512MB PC3200. Today I added a second 512MB, system properties, Sandra and Everest only see 512MB not 1024MB. If I use either one of the sticks the system correctly recognises 512MB, when they are both in only one stick is recognised.

For some reason Sandra has always stated that maximum installable memory was 768MB. I ignored this at the time as it goes against the spec of the motherboard listed above.

The operating system is Windows XP.

Any ideas?

Yes, 512MB. I'm puzzled that sissoft sandra says the memory limit is 768MB when the board spec says 3Gig.

that board allows any mix of memory sizes in any slot so it should work fine..

have you tried populated the slots backwards ?

Talking

I've just taken both DIMMS out, put the original back in alone then rebooted and memory was 512MB as expected. Then switched off added the second DIMM and it booted saying 1024MB. Don't see how the memory could have been seated badly before as when I added the second stick it was the original one which was not being recognised. Oh well it works for now, thanks for your help.
