check out this link:
Doom 3 bench marks
It'll give you an idea of what it will run on and which are the optimal settings, should some specs close to your system.

I think he's just showing off - it'll run just fine. Actually it runs OK on way slower rigs than that. John Cormack is not stupid - he's not going to release a game that won't run on most peeps computers, so it's actually less abusive of hardware than Far Cry I believe. Bu now I'm going to have to give up on buying the Morrettes so I can afford to upgrade the comp anyway....

But thanks for pointing me at the other forum for computer stuff.
I've no just got to tune my ram / cpu settings and a fresh WinXP install, with the latest drivers.
The ATi9800pro I started with is now in the P4 system, which I also bought a few bits for (P4C800-E DLX / TwinX XMS3200C2PT amonst others) and running much better.
My original questions on here was along the lines of what could I do to get the most out of my P4/ATi9800pro... well, the basic answer was AMD/ATi.. but then I starting looking at Doom3 reports... so the final purchase (honest) was the 6800GT (and a Zalman 7000B for the P4).
I'm now skint for the rest of the year!
Thanks guys, Alex

Infact ordered the Zalman 7000B to fit to the AMD today.
And thats it now, no more spending....
