Smile Smoke!!

Spec:
P4 2.56
512 DDR Ram
Asus P4G8X E7205 Chipset Dual DDR 533FSB + SATA + 1394 + AGP8xGbit Lan
Radion 9700 pro

Been fine for about a year, maybe abit longer. Yesterday, smoke starts coming out the psu. As I go to take out the power cord, the psu pops, game over.

Got a new PSU today, plugged it in, works fine. Motherboard all lights up. On first boot the motherboard bleeped. Again and again, long bleeps. So I swapped my memory to differant slots, and tried again. This time it didn't beep. Just made noises like it was booting.

BUT I get nothing on my screens, my monitor doesn't even switch on. So I thought it was my video card, took it to a mate and it works fine.

Any ideas? Is my motherboard toast? Or CPU?

My current motherboard is:
Asus P4G8X E7205 Chipset Dual DDR 533FSB + SATA + 1394 + AGP8xGbit Lan
If this is toast, can you recommend a better unit.

Would it be toats even though it all lights up, and bleeps?

Any help great, as I'm on my old laptop until I get it fixed!

normally the memory slots get fried.. pull the memory out and look for burning on the chip and slots ..

Indeed, when I changed the memory into slot B, the bleeping went away.

So does that mean new memory & new motherboard?

does it now work? if so it's the motherboard slots.. if it's still borked then it could be both that's fried.

last time I had one that did this it was the memory - hope that helps !

I'm taking my memory to a mates house later today to test it. If that works then looks like it's the board.

Yep the fans run as normal.

I took everything out apart from the motherboard. When I turn it on, powers on for 1 second then turns off.

With cpu connected it turns on, but no output on the screen.

Wish there was an easier way to test it!

Had similar problem a while ago but no smoke and PSU was OK but still had no screen and no boot. I installed PCI graphics card (was AGP) and screen returned but still no boot. Took Mobo battery out and reset system - still no joy. Downloaded the latest mobo bios and applied it and hey presto all back working - must have been corrupted BIOS.

Maybe flashing BIOS might help if you can get the screen/graphics working to see what you are doing.

All the best.
