hiberfil.sys
diskeeper has come up with this - hiberfil.sys, what is it?
report says : fragments - 2, file size - 511mb, filename - \hiberfil.sys [excluded]
windows xp pro BTW - is it something to do with a hibernate mode?

Yes its the hibernation file. All the contents of the memory are written to it when u hibernate. Personally i would just turn off "allow hibernation" and reclaim the space
