I've found Sygate tends to have less impact on the PC. Whether it's a more compact / better written program I don't know. Wasn't hugely impressed with Kerio - worked OK, just didn't like the design. Go for Zonealarm or Sygate (Sygate would be my preference if you pushed me).

Some viruses can turn Zonealarm off so avoid that too.
