Upgrade time
In expectation of the forthcoming Doom and HL2 release, I think it is time for a hardware upgrade. Currently I'm running with an XP2000; A7V333 mobo; 768 mb pc2700 RAM and a Radeon 9600 pro. Would I see better gain in upgrading to a XP3000 / 3200 and mobo or getting a 9700 / 9800 pro?

I cuurrently run an 9600pro with an XP3000 with a gig of PC3200 DDR.
I have had the graphics card for about 18 months and it's still going strong. I have however upgraded the processor twice in that period from an XP2000 (266 FSB) to a Barton XP2500 (333 FSB) to my current Barton XP3000 (400 FSB).
You will be limited to a 333 FSB XP3000 however, but for a £90 quid upgrade it should give you a boost.
As for graphics, I'm going to install Doom3 & then evaluate - if I can't run it @ 1024x768 with all the goodies on I'll upgarde. But untill then I'll stick with my 9600.
Upgrading from a 9600pro to a 9800pro won't give you *that* much of a boost. Wait for the new chipset's to come down in price.
1 gig of memory helps lots - Cheap too.

I think I'll go for the cpu / mobo upgrade first. I've been told by the guys in the local PC shop that I'll see better gain that way than by upgrading to 9800 pro. .........Actually, I can get hold of a x800 for just £250 so I think I'll get one of those bad-boys instead!

I'm lucky I have an Asus A7N8x that can run 400 FSB, so I'm about to upgrade from athlon xp 2500 to 3200 barton and add crucial memory also
I already have an ATI 9800 Pro so the whole upgrade will cost be about £160, I'm glad I invested in a decent motherboard originally
