Default do we have any "experienced" winxp networking guys on here ?

Desperately in need of some help: (OS = WINXP Pro SP1a)

1.Ran a spyware removal tool which found 121 items.

2.After removing these, LAN card stopped working - eg. could broadcast packets but couldn't receive any

3.Set LAN card from DHCP to a fixed private IP address, set dns manually, set gateway manually. Rebooted

4.Noticed I couldn't logon to domain controller or access shared folders on the LAN anymore

5.Went to command prompt and found I could successfully PING IP addresses but not URL's

6.Tried net view and can successfully see all PC's on the LAN

7. Installed a different brand lan card and have the same problem

8. Tried a windows repair (boot WinXP disk, repair existing install)

Summary
Seems like LAN cards can work at the command prompt but can't work in windows itself (shared computers, printers, logon to server)

Ideally I'd like to remove / reinstall the windows networking component along with TCP/IP protocols but haven't a clue how to do this.

Any suggestions would be appreciated - I really don't want to do a clean install of winxp on this pc because I can't get the existing applications reinstalled.

Sounds very much like a DNS problem.

You can ping the DNS Server yeah, and the IP address in TCP/IP config is right?

Best thing I can suggest is to remove the IP stack from the card, reboot then re-install it, you may well have a corrupted dll lurking somewhere.

If you've run SP1 on the p.c. and not integrated the patches into the i386 install directory then you will need to run the SP1 patch again (and unfortunately the post sp1 patches as well...)

Try it and see how you get on.

Good Luck!

I had a similar problem before, and ended up repairing the TCP/IP stack portion of windows. There's a few guides on how to do it this is similar to what I did, but afterwards I also removed TCP/IP from my network settings and re-installed again from the .inf file that came with the XP distribution.

Very frustrating problem!

Right Click My Network Places
Properties
Double CLick Local Area Connection
Properties
Highlight TCP/IP
Remove

(you may not be able to do this, in which case remove the card from the Device Manager list and restart the p.c.)

UPDATE

Firstly, thanks all - very kind to take the time to help me.

Secondly, tried resetting the IP stack TO NO AVAIL - settings for each NIC just reverted back to default (Obtain IP automatically) and consequently both cards have gone back to the state of not receiving ANY packets.

If anyone has ANY ideas I can try please post, as this is really starting to be a problem now.

Any websites I can use for reference would be good too - I'm happy to try and solve the problem myself - its just the internet is such a huge place to try and pin down my specific problem - ms knowledge base is a nightmare!

Again its worth mentioning, that I can get most all network functionality from the command prompt (ping, net view all the pc's, etc)

Its when I'm actually in windows I can't see any machines on the LAN, or logon to the PDC. Even trying to telnet to our router from a "RUN" dialogue box results in the command prompt window being closed immediately.

All machines are fully virus checked and profiles updated daily.

PLEASE HELP!

Kieran,

in WinXP you can't simply remove tcp/ip from the lan card's properties - it doesn't give that option to uninstall - it simply lets me "untick" the tcp/ip box ,which I've tried already

RMOTE ACCESS - connectoin manager failed to start cos Point 2 Point failed
NETLOGON - service terminated - requested service provider couldn't load or initialise
IPSEC - terminated, couldn't load or init

UPATE:

We use Mcafee ViruscanASAP for protection. I'm trying to cover any possiblity and so I thought I'd remove it and see if it had been related to the above problems. Trouble is I can't find it in Add/Remove programs - anyone know how to uninstall it ?

Couple of things to check:

1) Does the computer have offline files enabled? Sometimes, if they think they are offline, they will refuse to access online shares, printers etc.

2) Is the primary DNS suffix set correctly?

3) Can you paste the results of an ipconfig /all so we can take a look?

Actually looking at your event log it looks like the problems run deeper than just misconfiguration!

Give this a go:-

Right click "My Network Places" select Properties.
Right click the connection and select Properties.
Click Install >Protocol >add >have disk
Browse to the location of nettcpip.inf (on XP CD)
Select TCP/IP click OK
Reboot

Or as a last resort, try http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/13/9/13-9-161.shtml
