General performance tips:

> Check your freespace on the drive holding the page file. Delete any sh*te
> Remove any old files (in temp dirs, temp internet files, Etc)
> [Maybe] Move your pagefile to a separate partition / drive
> Defrag all drives
> Uninstall any cr*p you no longer need
> Disable any services you don't use
> Check what's getting loaded from the Startup folder, registry, Etc (use Autoruns from www.sysinternals.com)

That's a good starting point

Check all the chuff being run at startup in the registry key:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

Some of it may be rubbish.

p.s. Be careful what you remove!!!

Stop running Windows...

Sorry, but it's true.

But: how much RAM? Which version of Windows? Anyway, whichever version you are running, it sounds like at least one prog you are running has a major memory leak.
