Can't Windows Update-scan freezes-help

Can't Windows Update-scan freezes-help
None of our office PCs have been able to use Windows Update for weeks now, need some advice as we have tried most of the tips on web forums.
Problem
Start Windows Update, runs, press Scan for Updates, sticks at 0%, programme hangs, have to Ctrl-Alt-Del out. Get error message Error 0x80072EF1
Setup
Windows XP on 100mb switch, ADSL router modem connected to switch, AOL ISP, Have Spybot, ad aware, sygate firewall, AVG anti-virus
Action taken
Set router firewall to "Allow All" - no difference
Checked Date/Time - correct
Cleared cache, cleared SSL certs
Checked Hosts file
Checked restricted sites list
Checked languages in IE
Can access SSL secured sites
Lots more I can't remember
Any ideas or tests we can do to try and pinpoint the problem?
